Glossary of Credit Card Terms
Annual Fee - A fee charged annually on some credit cards.
Balance Transfer - Moving a high interest credit balance to another credit card at a lower interest rate.
Billing Cycle - The time between billing statements, usually 28-31 days.
Credit Limit - The total dollar amount allowed to be charged on a credit card account.
Credit Card Number - An account number assigned to each individual card holder and printed onto a credit card.
Gift card - A stored value card which is either redeemable at a private retail outlet or a card issued from a major credit card issuer and can be redeemed at numerous participating outlets.
Grace Period - A period usually between 10 and 28 days where a person make a payment without being charged a finance or late fee.
Instant Online Approval - The ability of a card issuer to collect an applicant's information online and to give an instant decision online.
Overlimit - When a card holder exceeds the credit limit issued by an issuer.
Overlimit Fee - A fee charged by a lender when a cardholder's balance goes over their assigned credit limit.
Minimum Payment - The smallest payment amount required by a card holder to be paid each statement period.
Revolver - A person who makes payments on credit accounts over a period of time, rather than paying off balances each month.
Secured Credit Cards - Credit cards issued that require collateral ussually a deposit of money in order to get approved. Normally these cards are designed for people with less than perfect credit. These cards help to build or rebuild credit history.
Unsecured Credit Cards - Cards that are issued without any type of collateral. Normally these cards are issued to individuals with established credit history.
Usury - The lending of money at an exorbitant or illegally high rate.
